Hummus
« on: January 11, 2021, 08:32:06 pm »
OK, so I tried hummus for the first time today and I'm not impressed at all.  Its not bad, but its not good either.  Maybe I need to try a new flavor.  I opted for the Roasted Garlic and been eating it w grape tomatoes.  What do you guys eat w hummus?  What are some other flavors do you guys like?
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Rom 8:31)

First off, hummus and grape tomatoes don't mix.  If you want a veggie for dipping, try green peppers or celery.

My advice is to not buy it pre-flavored and just add flavoring yourself.

I personally add a little olive oil each time I eat it (to make it juicy) with maybe a little cayenne or chilli powder sprinkled on top.

Big fan of hummus. We buy it weekly.  The Sabra brand has excellent choices- prefer the olive tapenade or greek inspired.  Use it with carrots or celery to dip, or with Wasa crisps which are 100% whole grain and low in sodium.

The little grape tomatoes were ok w the hummus, but it wasn't hitting the spot.  I'm gonna try celery and carrots and see where it takes me.  I'm fasting and cant have certain foods...basically just fruits, veggies, nuts, legumes, whole grains, oats, brown rice and water.  So I'm vegan right now...LOL.  Might have to eat a freshly mowed lawn....

I am vegetarian for the most part.  Occasionally I’ll break down and have salmon however.  In any event, made avocado “fries” the other night.  Tgey were awesome.  Google avocado fries with panko bread crumbs.  Use a chipotle ranch dressing for dipping.  Killer.

Nice....but don’t laugh....I’ve never had avocado.  The neon green color turns me off.  Yeah I know that sounds crazy but it’s true.  I’ve never had avocado toast, guacamole, anything w avocado.    Deep purple veggies also turn me off also, like eggplant, purple cabbage, beet root, rutabagas...it’s mental I know, but it’s real.  😂😂😂

I have tried some plant based meals and some new (to me) veggies like butternut squash & asparagus.  Hummus was also something new.  I finally found one I liked, red roasted pepper (I added a little salsa) w carrots & celery.  I also tried almond butter instead of peanut butter.  Pretty good as well.

If you want to go veggie once in a while, do the veggie burrito at chipotle.  The real one with free guacamole, not the one with that fake meat.

Beyond meat and such is OK as long as you char it good.  The thicker the patty, the more obvious it is that it's not meat.

Hummus is made from chickpeas which is a legume and aren’t great for you. Peanuts are also legumes, if you are going to eat legumes you may as well do natural peanut butter on celery or something like that.

I would highly recommend almond butter. Cream cheese on veggies would probably be better for you.

I do both.  Natural peanut butter is work though...stirring to mix.  I seen a "hack" on FB to store the jar upside down, shake, stir and go.  Haven't tried it yet though.  No dairy..so no cheese.

I have understood legumes only present a downside if they aren’t cooked.  I know hummus is a good source of protein, fiber and helps keep blood sugar levels low.  Anything I’m missing?

Hollow I forget, are you in Philly?  If so, try the hummus from Dizengoff.  There are a couple locations in the city. It's the closest thing I've had to the hummus I ate when I was in Israel. It's really really good.
