Slim Pickings
« on: January 24, 2021, 07:50:39 pm »
Looked at the FA list to see who they could possibly sign at PF up the road...the pickings are slimmy slim.

Heres the entire list of FA available right now.....maybe a few could help off the bench.

But to be honest, they don't look any better than what's on the bench now.  I can't believe Hezonja hasn't been signed.  He's not that old and very athletic.

I thought Hezonja said he was going back to Europe? Maybe I'm wrong I guess.

Vonleh can play some 4 and 5. He's got to be better than Bradley, right? Waive Bradley, eat his contract, sign Vonleh to a ten day deal.

I thought about Vonleh too, but looking over his stats over the last couple years, I’m not so sure he’s that much better than Bradley.

He may have said it after POR and MEM moved on from him and no one came knocking.  Looking at his stats he’s no better than what PHI has coming off the bench now either.

They gotta find someone...Scott is ok, but if they can find a cheap upgrade they need to pounce.

I see that Nemanja Bjelica (6'10 stretch PF) is pretty much riding the pine in SAC since Bagley's dad started making noise.  He went from scoring about 12ppg last season to 7ppg this season.  Minutes got cut in half and he's just going through the motion.  He is a PF that is a career 39% 3FG (42% last season).  He's cheap ($7M0 and next year is non guaranteed.  I think SAC would trade him for nothing more than a 2d rd pick.

...right after I bring him up I see this posted.

https://phillysportsnetwork.com/2021/01/24/sixers-three-reserve-power-forward-options-to-bolster-the-bench/

They mention 2 of the 3 I suggested:

1.  Ersan - I like Ersan.  He can shoot, gr8 team defender who knows how to rotate and take charges, can pass, and can rebound.  He had his best 1/2 a season here in PHI then ditched PHI for more money.  Can't blame him for that, even though I'm still heated we gave up Grant for a rental.

2.  Spellman - local nat'l champ outta Nova.  Prolly could do him some good coming back to PHI and close to home & Jay who could possible help mentor him back off the fringe NBA player list.  Played pretty well w GSW last season before the shipped him.  NYK cut him to bring back vet Taj Gipson (one of Tibbs fav players from CHI and MIN).

3.  Bjelica - yeah, he lied to Brand and signed in SAC, after saying he was returning to Europe.  But that was business when they offered him like $2-3M more than what the 6ers offered.  Can't blame him there.

I want the next Jeremi Grant.  The one who's value has been suppressed by dopey coaching like Grant's was.

That must be why he's no longer in the NBA. I thought maybe he had turned the corner a couple of years ago when he was with the Knicks. When he came out of college, I thought he would be a solid defender/rebounder.

I don't think he had dopey coaching.  He couldn't shoot a lick or barely dribble as a rookie and 1st yr player, but he could always defend.  I just think he got better as most players should w time.  What was dopey may have been how he was used, but not developed.  OKC had too many others to feed the ball to and he was no where near on their pecking order for offense.  In DEN he got to show some of what he had learned, but they went out and drafted MPJ and Bol Bol, guys who play his position.  So to me he did the right thing to leave.

He played ok w the NYK that one season, but they were only a 19 win team.  He never should've left school early.  Should've stayed one more year at least.  He was ok, but his size helped him at that level.  Once he got to the NBA where everybody has size, he wasn't that good.  Then he never really got better in NBA.  Just kept getting shipped.  Has played w 6 teams and he's only 25yrs old.

As good as Wood and Grant are now, it's hard to believe they couldn't have done more as Sixers.

Lot's of tall talent just lingering around that waiver wire now.  The league is obsessed with "3 and D" wings.

Little love is given to the athletic bigs that can also give you a second rim protector at the 4.  Paul Reed can be that guy but he's still a year or two away IMO.

When Grant and Wood were here they were rookies and still developing.  They are finished products now.  They didn't come into the league like what they are displaying.   It took years and patience.  Something multiple teams weren't willing to do.  I always loved them both, and I am a build it from the draft person.  I hate when you ship young guys for a "chance" to get to the next level.  If that chance doesn't happen then you get what we see w Grant now.  The 6ers traded Grant for Ersan and that run in 2016-2017.  Its that same kinda talk now that folks wanna trade Maxey or Matisse.  Most of the talent on the waiver wire is fringe talent or old guys like Korver.  Guys like Rondae Hollis barber and Kid-Gilchrist are fringe players at this point in their careers.  Are they really better than what you have now?  They won't make a difference at all IMO
