The Bench?
« on: January 24, 2021, 11:31:03 am »
It was working fine that last couple of weeks but now Doc has the expressed loyalty to Kork as his first or second man off the bench. And, despite his 8 or  9 points last night, the first half was a total mess and scored 2 points, by Maxey. I still think Maxey and Milton should be your first two players off the bench and I don't know what to say about Thybulle. He likes to dribble the air out of the ball, foul three point attempts and toss it over to the other team at times or via charge. His shot isn't working and would rather someone else take those 3-4 threes out of the corner. How much can you reconcile with his sometimes disruptive defense. His shortcomings are beginning to be quite apparent if he doesn't understand his role a little better. Kork can't play defense and probably never will. His decision making and trying to get the shot off in an instant is lowering his value and he's not making shots either. He needs to be set then it seems to come back to him. I don't know. I don't like this rotation but I'll let Doc to the coaching. Maxey seems to give them the needed charge and Shake was bringing the scoring. I really liked those two for whatever reason and I do like how Joe was showing.

PS: The first half we were outscored by their bench 22 - 2 or 20- 2 and the plus minus was -47 or something for our bench and a +20 something for their. In the second half it was neutralized but that first half, which is only a sample of one, was horrible and it seems to coincide with Kork returning. Maybe he needs to knock the rust off or maybe they're trying to play him up to use as a trade chip? As I said, I'll leave the coaching to doc. Just a thought post.

I am not a believer in Korkmaz. Is the guy any better than Don Ohl. I think he's worse since Ohl was a one time starter for the Bullets.

I think the bench is way overvalued on this team.  Shake is a streaky player but is he a good shooter or just a volume guy?  Maxey is a nice guard off the bench but he's a 5 point per night guy and nothing more.  Thybulle is really strong defender but passes up more open threes than anyone.  Korkmaz is a nothing player, Joe can hit a three but I don't know what else he brings.  I think that will be the major change at the deadline.  I see them adding like they did a few years back, some vets that have specific skills like Iliasova type players.

Maxey is struggling but you see the potential for him to be a two way star.  So you put up with the growing pains.

Shake's defense is much improved, and even on an off day he's good for a few tough buckets off his own dribble.

But with Matisse and Kork, it just doesn't feel worth it to give them minutes.

Can't disagree mra128. I hope they parse this out.

I think they showcasing Korkmaz. Sixers can get a nice player by trading DG and Korkmaz with one FIRST and 1 2nd rounder. Sixers badly need a SF who can guard, create for himself and for others.

I forgot Howard, he has been solid.  He does some of the dumbest things I've seen but he rebounds, he doesn't give any cheap baskets (does give some cheap shots to the guy driving).  I think they add a vet wing who can shoot.  I wish Mike Scott had some game left but he doesn't.

Those 2 (FK and MT) have been frustrating to watch. Doc seems to be shunning the rookies a bit and deferring to guys with more experience, even if it's only a year as with MT. Their shots and decision making is not getting any better.

The question is,

Is Daryl Morey trying to build a bench that he thinks can help win a title this year?
or
Is Doc trying to grow a bench that will be ready to win a title in '22 or 23?

When I see Kork coming in as the 6th or 7th guy I get this horrible pain. OMG

I think Doc is still in his "learning" phase with our roster.  Figuring out what he's really got.

No way he's gonna have Maxey remain our "10th man in".

The thing with Kork is I don't think we have full bird rights on him after this season.  If he does kill it it's only gonna guarantee that he walks.

Shake as far as I'm concerned is our "3 and D" wing off the bench.  With the added benefit of doing some nice stuff off his own dribble.

I'd scour the market for a proper back up point guard.  Someone who can actually run an offense when Ben is on the bench.

And man would I love it if we added a rim protecting 4 who can hit jumpers.  Jeremi Grant would be so perfect for us now.

hey- don ohl was a 5x nba all star. korkmaz won't ever sniff an all star game. he also averaged 26 ppg in an epic playoff series

doesn't doc generally have a history of not particularly liking to play rookies? the only ones i've seen looking back his last few years were sga and shamet that got sig time

I don't see any bias against rookies.

Doc started Maxey in Curry's absence despite the analytics telling him that it was a bad fit.  Maxey failed miserably when given that task.

Matisse is now getting minutes despite being a complete zero on offense most nights.

Kork who is actually younger than Matisse is being force fed minutes.

Bradley and Reed are big downgrades over Embiid and Howard.  Hard to justify given them minutes when all hands are on deck.

Y'all funny....
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Rom 8:31)
