Sixers Forum / So, who says no?
« on: October 18, 2023, 06:14:18 pm »
Heard this speculation on the Simmons podcast:

It's getting toward the deadline. Harden has been sulking and bitching. Team is spinning its wheels. Jo says get me out of this mess. Not unreasonable since he has had a revolving door of pissed off teammates and he's getting old(er).

OKC, with their fifteen first rounders calls.

- Giddey and four or five first rounders for Jo (note they are not all OKC's picks, which would suck since they'll be a top team with an SGA/Joel combo)
- Flip Harden and Tobias (both expirings I believe) for a pu-pu platter of whatever draft capital they can get
- The process begins again and I die a little inside.

Doc for sure. That was Doc Rivers 10th time losing a Game 7 (maybe 9th, can't remember). Especially considering how they lost. Tatum went nuts at the start of the 3rd and you could just see them give up. The whole team’s body language went south and it wasn’t even the fourth quarter yet. The coach can’t make the shots, but inspiring his team not to quit is pretty much the job description.

The Philly ownership group has eleventy billion dollars and Ben's contract is a rounding error for them even before you consider the appreciating value of the franchise itself. I am going to go ahead and assume that a healthy ego comes along with all of the zeros, and Ben has to be getting close to the point where they just want to show him who the real big dog is and bury him for four years of his prime out of vindictiveness. He's just spitting in their eye again and again and eventually they may just take away the one thing he does appear to care about - being famous and partying with celebs - by taking all the oxygen away from his flame and letting him rot. I'm generally a staunchly pro-labor guy and it pains me to side with billionaires, but honestly, I'd be ok with this.

If I am an owner, do I want to commit to a guy for $100 million plus when he a) has serious flaws in his game and b) has proven to be a malcontent who does not honor his contract, communicate with the team, or have any concern at all for his teammates/team culture? If it is my money, that's a hard pass.

Don't sell Maxey short.

He's got a great first step, and a great finishing step.  And in between he can hit an 8-16 foot running floater better than anyone I've seen.

Only problem being, he's really a 2 and we have him playing point since we have absolutely no one that looks even vaguely like a true point on the roster.

If only we could find a Mikal Bridges type in the draft ,,,,

Sixers Forum / Re: Break Glass in case of Emergency Trade - CJ?
« on: October 24, 2021, 11:33:43 am »
Honestly, I doubt we could get CJ straight up for Simmons at this point. This isn't taking a flyer on a talented but troubled kid, this is swallowing a major headache at worst, and a very flawed third banana at best from the new team's perspective. If someone came into my boardroom offering this distressed an asset, I'd need to see a lot more upside than Simmons has shown. His game has not improved a lick since he came into the league and now he's proving to be a problem in the clubhouse. If he is what he is on the court and shows no progress or inclination to work on his flaws, and he's already at maximum cost and a second flameout will make him completely untradeable, why would i want to commit 100 million of my money (and cap) to this guy? As a 10 or 15 million a year flyer on a shorter contract? Absolutely. As a petulant, insubordinate max cost guy for four freaking years? Pass. Too much risk for too little upside.

Unless and until Simmons plays and shows that he has improved, at least a little, I think he's going to be pretty tough to move for anything useful. These owners did not get rich by buying high on distressed assets.

Apparently an extra second and some cash were kicked in due to his health issues.

Sixers Forum / Ben Simmons = Eric Lindros?
« on: January 16, 2021, 10:38:04 am »
Godlike talent, but never willing or able to put it all together and really be THE GUY bringing home championships. Serious work ethic/attitude questions, at least early career, with a strong whiff of diva. Conviction of his own greatness perhaps stunting early development and lowering his ceiling from one of the greats to, well, I guess he is a Hall of Famer, sorta. I've seen this show and I don't particularly want to buy another ticket.

Fair comparison?

This article is pretty direct about it ...

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2021/1/15/22232686/sixers-shooters-ben-simmons-joel-embiid

Some pulls from it:

"The more glaring issue is that he struggles to score from anywhere outside of 3 feet from the basket. Simmons is shooting 33.3 percent between 3 and 10 feet and zero percent between 10 feet and the 3-point line. That trend goes back to his rookie season."

"Simmons doesn’t really have a plan when he can’t get to the rim. He can’t shoot off the dribble, and has never had a consistent floater. The end result when he’s forced to shoot are off-balance shots that don’t have much chance
."

Yeah, he's not fooling anybody anymore.

If they can get Beal for Simmons, I'll piggyback Ben there and Bradley back. That said, Washington can do better by taking picks plus filler from a crappier team like the Bulls or OKC if they can make the salaries work.

Steaming turd of a game, but Maxey and Shake seemed to use it as fertilizer. Ok, bad metaphor, but hey, trying to find a bright side.

I'll be a bigger believer after we play some better teams. The Nets are coming up, let's see how that goes.

Sixers Forum / Re: The fundamental problem with James Harden
« on: January 03, 2021, 05:32:35 pm »
I'm always inclined to at least try to see both side of things and there is an argument that all things Houston are not just James being difficult. Ever since the new owner came in it has kind of been one thing after another in Houston. Morey was an institution but he was left out to dry on the China comments and ended up leaving pretty abruptly. Other rumblings from staff and players as well though I cannot recall specifics right now. There is at least a whiff of the fish rotting from the head down there.

I wholeheartedly agree that chemistry and team play certainly matter, but the 21st century championships have been dominated by dynamic duos and big threes. We have one all caps GUY in Jo, but we lack the other as, in my opinion, Ben has too much Robin in him and not enough Batman. This thread seems to have a lot of folks who don't think the Beard is a legit GUY and I just don't see it. A jerk? Absolutely. One of the ten best players in the league? Also, absolutely.
