Sixers Forum / Re: Player development is more important than getting high picks
« on: March 15, 2025, 01:08:12 pm »Our Process basically had 2 parts:
1. Pull out all stops to lose as many games as possible.
2. Pull out all stops to win as many games as possible.
There really wasn't a "let's try to win while developing young guys".
Simmons brought this up when explaining why he never really developed the way most wanted him to develop.
I know fans are queening out over us keeping our 1st round pick.
These same fans don't seem to care one lick that we secured the Clippers unprotected 2028 1st as well as a pick swap in 2029.
But realistically speaking, the biggest positive thing we can do for the remaining 18 games is to try to win while playing the young guys.
Would have been great for McCain to be involved in this, but Grimes, Council, Edwards and Bona are all talented players who could use this opportunity find their games, and more importantly sell Nurse on giving them a rotation spot next season when we're at full strength.
Our chances of getting a top 3 pick are about 22% if we have the 7th worst record, and 27% if we have the 5th worst record. In this sense the incentive to tank hard is pretty limited.
As for not winning the lotto, but keeping our 5th/6th pick, meh. We're more likely to find a gem properly developing the young players we currently have than intentionally losing for the #5 or 6 pick in the draft. And it's no guarantee that we'll keep the 5th/6th pick without winning the lottery either, it's
