They make this trade 100 times and in most instances it works out fine. They follow it up by trading the 2nds for a useful frontcourt bench player plus pocketed a pick. In most instances, Maxey, VJ and Grimes are generally healthy and we don't have enough playing time to showcase McCain, anyway. Or heck, maybe in a few scenarios Morey gets our pick back instead of valuing the 2nds.

Unfortunately, the way it played out, Morey couldn't flip the 2nds and VJ Grimes and Maxey each missed games. Which for sure sucks but was highly unlikely, so I can't get on the FO for the process. Trading McCain made generally sense.

The only thing that bothers me is it felt like a bit of a half measure. If you are trying to duck the tax, that suggests you dont believe in the team... so go get your pick back. Choosing to receive a worse 1st rounder so you can have a couple seconds with the intention of flipping them, suggests you do believe in the team... So like, which is it actually? It's that inconsistency that I find frustrating.

Kind of like how they refused to trade Yabusele at last years deadline but then also clearly had no interest in re-signing Yabusele.

Joel's got a great story and he's done a lot of good for the 76ers which should be recognized and commended. and if you watch sports primarily for entertainment, to see individual talent showcased, there's no doubt that when he plays, Joel can give that to you. But, if you want to win a championship, your best player's health and availability is absolutely a huge, giant, factor in any plan. And missing 49% of his games or 50% of his games is not materially different to championship aspirations. Either % demands attention and discussion. In fact, either % almost surely (wont say absolutely) removes any realistic possibility of winning a title.

Trading Embiid may be possible but, to me, seems highly unlikely. Let's see what Embiid does over the remainder of this season and during the playoffs. Obviously, if he plays well, there may be some interest. Alternatively, if he plays well, Morey may not even consider trading Embiid.

Yeah that's sort of what I was getting at with the comment about the FO needing to be willing to do it. I don't think they will trade him... But, I think they should

The situation with AD is vastly different than that with Embiid. First, although Davis is frequently injured, he's missed far fewer games than Embiid. Secondly, he has two years remaning on his contract that will cost the Wizards about $121M. Embiid will cost the Sixers $193M over three years. Finally, Davis and Young (1 year, $48M) were acquired for players who are not part of the Wizards future.

I wouldn't characterize that as vastly different. That 1 extra year which is absolutely notable, no disagreement, but not vastly different. ADs played in 243 games the last 5 years while Joel has played in 225. Over the last 3 seasons Joels actually played in more games. 89 to 71.

Why couldn't McCain substitute for Maxey to play with VJ...

That's a 10 minute a night player. 13 with a coach who would play Maxey a more reasonable 35 mins a night.

your making such a big stink about a 10-15 min player on this team?

While that may be the case... That does not mean that both could not have worked... I have made the case that at minimum McCain could have been the 6th man...

At a minimum? You are going to have to elaborate on that, Cowboys. Sounds like your suggesting you expect he should start. Ie in a 3 guard lineup with Maxey and VJ?!? For a guy that hates small ball that sounds preposterous.

I maintain there's an AD/Wizards type trade out there somewhere. The FO just needs to be willing to make it.

All the explanations you give are legitimate, but I doubt they had anything to do with Morey's decision to move him. He was an inexpensive rookie who was a developing shooting option off the bench. Morey spent all the money on Joel and PG and was/is left shopping at the Dollar Tree to build a team. Does it matter? Probably not.

Come on Nina, of course he considered McCain's long term viability on the roster. but yes I agree with you that it was stupid to max PG. That combined with Joel's inability to play have put the team in a huge bind. Short term, (ie this and next 2 years) they are in a no win situation.

He's scoring off the bench, isn't he? How is that a poor fit with Maxey or any of the OKC starters?

Most teams play their starters more minutes in the playoffs. So if Maxey's getting 38+ minutes that's 10-12 minutes a night in the playoffs for McCain. Plus you need to have a good 4th guard to play with Maxey while VJ sits because you can't play Maxey and McCain together unless you want to watch teams shoot over our backcourt ala Jayson Tatum 3 years ago.

It's also a near impossibility to play a 3 guard rotation when 2 of your guys are 6'2.

I mean hey, you can make anyone your 6th man. but if you want a good one then fit needs to be accounted for. you want someone who makes you more versatile. Can play with VJ or Maxey or even both in 3 guard change of pace lineups (or if a forward is hurt).

I like Jared. Heck... I said to start the season, there's an argument to be made that you trade Maxey for a huge haul and rebuild with VJ/McCain.
But yeah... imo its poor asset management/roster construction to expect to get big minutes from both Maxey and McCain on the same team.  And i'd argue the vast majority of fans on this forum and in the Delaware valley understood that 2 years ago when he was drafted.

McCain fits better with OKCs cause Shai and Jalen Williams are big guards. But I think Caruso, Mitchell and Carson Wallace get more playoff minutes (assuming health) so how many minutes is your 5th or 6th guard getting?

You guys act like it's beyond any possibility that we can make the playoffs and that Embiid can be healthy for said playoffs.

The 6ers could make the playoffs and Embiid could be healthy for a short playoff run. But yeah, it absolutely is beyond any possibility that he'd be healthy for a finals run, or even an ECF run.

they may have sold at a high (or at least relativly high) point. i can even understand the bad fit, especially long term. what i cant agree with is the thought process that this team is as good as any team in the east, in the hunt for an eastern conference title and trading mccain makes them a better team this year. sure, no one could have seen this level of injury, but even without it, they are better with mccain then without him. is it possible the rockets pick turns out to be a better fit, sure, its not crazy to say that can happen, but what can also happen is like with most later 1st round picks, you arent going to know what you have for a while, that guy may not work out and mccain may keep getting better. if this team was truly about winning a title this year, they dont trade mccain to get under the tax. even if you think trading mccain for a better long term fit was a good trade, they didnt get "a haul" for him, they arent better without him and the roster without him isnt perfect. mccain will get quality playoff minutes and isnt some throw away player. maybe he's a career 6th, 7th guy on a team, those guys, on rookie deals, arent just close your eyes and replaceable. its not the end of the world, but its not a good deal for the 2025-26 sixers either.

Yeah I mostly agree with all that.

If you believe in the team this year you don't trade McCain without getting a player back. (id just argue they don't believe in the team).

I agree they didn't get a "haul" for him. But expecting a haul for a 6'2 shooter coming off a major injury is probably unlikely. However, they absolutely could have kept him, built him back up, and traded him this summer for more. Or... simply gotten their own pick back, or had a follow up trade already figured out to flip those 2nds for a backup center, or shooting wing. Any of those scenarios would have been better.

I could be wrong but I don't think he's going to get quality playoff minutes. I think he's going to be a change of pace guy who gets sporadic minutes. When a game's not going well Daigneault will see if McCain can get hot. But I dont think he will play a consistent 15-20 minutes a night.

This is the one thing that I do not agree with you...

Isiah Thomas was 6'1 and his backcourt mate was Joe Dumars at 6'3... Vinny "Microwave" Johnson was 6'2... And guess what, they nearly had a 3 Peat...

Add they had a nice SF in Dantley and Maguirre... But the larger difference was the FRONT COURT... John Salley was 6'11, James Edwards was 7'1, Dennis Rodman 6'7, Bill Laimbeer was 6'11, William Bedford was 7'0, Daryll Dawkins was 6'11, Ron Moore was 7'0,m Chuck Nevitt 7'5, and Rick Mahorn was 6'10... I've made this point before... Just as I made it with the Cavs having 2 small guys in the backcourt, again, the difference being they got 2 trees at PF/C...

Yes, no doubt, if you can build one of the greatest defensive teams of all time than you can compete with a smaller backcourt, but A) that's really hard to build. You're actively making it harder to find the right pieces around the rest of the roster instead of easier. And B) There's way more ball movement, more switching defenses, and 3 point shooting in this era which makes size and length on the defensive end more important.

I'm talking about where he currently...he's not irreplaceable, but it's not a certain, let alone likely that you get someone equal or better with the rockets pick.

Well, sure, But it's also not certain that McCain would be able to consistently do what he's doing in OKC on a healthy 6ers team because he's such a poor fit with Maxey. The vast majority of 6ers fans understood that when we drafted him. But we're so starved for young talent that we forget. McCain's a case of a guy who fits better on other teams, so he was always destined to get traded. But like for sure, I get being p*ssed they sold at a low point on him.

How ever you want to word it, finding someone better or equal in talent or fit is probably less then 50/50 with a late first round draft pick

Just depends on where he lands on the Curry scale. If he's closer to Seth than it should be easy, if he's Steph, then yeah, the 6ers really f*cked up.

...why trade a talented guard that would have made a perfect 6th man who is cost controlled for a pie in  the sky draft pick?
McCain wouldn't make a perfect 6th man on any team with Maxey or any other small lead guard. You want to be able to play your best players together, particularly in the playoffs.

While it's possible they are better off, what are the chances they find a better player?
It shouldn't be hard, but really they don't need to find a player that's "better" than McCain. They need to find one that's a better "fit" than McCain. Someone who can play more minutes (especially playoff minutes) next to Maxey, not in place of Maxey.

Having said all that, ducking the tax, selling low on McCain (instead of showcasing him) and not getting an actual player back suggests the Font Office doesn't believe this team can make a run. If that's the case, they should absolutely have gotten back their own 1st so they could have control of it instead of acquiring the 2nds in the hopes of flipping them for some unknown player at the deadline.

Clippers are still stuck in the middle, just now they are in the middle with some flexibility instead of middle while being old, which is for sure a move in the right direction. If Kawhi is terminated and they gain a bunch of cap space, it may work out quite well for them.

If the 6ers can move Joel and PG without having to attach value to them they should absolutely do it asap. But... I doubt they'd trade Joel. He'd have to ask for a trade first. Maybe if they brought in a new GM he might "take this team in a new direction". But  usually the new guys like to take their shot with the aging superstar before realizing its time to move on.
