I've done some detailed posts about cap space in other threads.
But atm it's all too speculative because we don't know what happens to the GM and the HC.
If we guess the HC goes and GM stays, you next have to guess what the GM wants to do with Hardly.
I believe the love affair has no end in sight, the GM will convince himself the performance of Hardly in Philly is hamstring, HC, adjustment etc related. My guess is the GM has already agreed to give Hardly a 4 year max (an agreement prohibited by the CBA). He made exactly such an illegal agreement with CP and admitted that on a Zach Lowe podcast.
If those guesses are correct then the starting position for offseason adjustments is severely limited.
A factor which points in favor of the guess about Hardly is that the logical thing to require pre trade was for Harden to opt in. By contrast the GM specifically negotiated for Nets to agree to dock Simmons salary to reduce the amount owing by Simmons on the unpaid fines until it's all paid back. Interesting that was a term but Hardly first opting in wasn't. That suggests some other side agreement was reached with Hardly about his future. Why not same side deal that was done for CP?
A factor pointing the other way is the report that Hardly intended to exercise the option but didn't get the paperwork in before the trade was finalized. Well he's had plenty of time and still hasn't so I discount that report.
Anyway either way he's here with huge contract next season.
That means we have:
the mini MLE
probably trade Korkmaz, Shake, Springer
possibly trade Harris
That assumes GM will keep Hardly, Embiid, Maxey, Thybulle, Niang and Joe. Probably Reed and Bassey.
Gone are Green, Jordan and Millsap.
The Harden trade looks like it was an all in move by our GM. So far as I recall only two people on the forum were in favor of the trade.
I was in favor of it. And still was until game 4. That game shook me much worse than game 5 did. Game 4 made it abundantly clear that A. Joel will never be able to execute with enough precision to win 4 out of 7 games against elite competition. Those turnovers were an embarrassment. And something I thought were in the rear view mirror. And B. Harden isn’t anywhere near good enough to take the reigns so that we can mask Joel’s playmaking limitations.
It’s over. (Even if they get past this series).
