Flyers Forum / A possible free agent

https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/philadelphia-flyers/latest-news/flyers-connections-can-help-them-land-top-khl-free-agent
I have been fooled before but this player could be better than what we have. He is 22 and he is a center in the next few weeks he will be a free agent. My thinking is even at this stage h is much better than the captain Coots. Bigger 6'3", faster and even if his scoring falls off my guess is he will put up better numbers than Coots. As he story says he has some connections with the Flyers. The Flyers I believe wanted to be players in the free agent game this year but there are few players left and they are holding over 40 million to spend. Time to buy low on a possible player who has improved each year; I love stats and his graff from 2022 to now concerning scoring is very consistent rising. Your thoughts?

I think Elias Petterson makes a ton of sense.
He did his best under Tocchet, and the 2 apparently had a friendly talk during the Olympics.
His bloated cap hit shouldn't be a problem for us given the steady pipeline of cost-controlled talent we have coming in over the next 5 seasons.
The key is the Canucks accepting a defacto salary dump in the arrangement.  If they want draft/prospect compensation they need to eat at least 4 million per year of his current contract.
Pattersons age is ok but I do not think VC will eat that much salary over the next 5 years. Patterson is a big upgrade, but I wonder if there is a young center that DB can get on a good deal?
The deals from last year were great. Just think if the team had sold the players DB brought in last year on trades and free agency what the returns would be. Trevor Zegras, Christian Dvorak and Dan Vladar could have brought in a ton of draft picks and prospects. Plus, the deal to rid the team of a very bad contract moving Ryan Ellis to the Sharks.

This franchise does need to find a way to get a hold of 2 more average goalies and a 1C.

Zegras's faceoff issues keep getting worse.
Kruk I totally agree we need a 1c. We do not need a backup goalie as the team should wait on Egor Zavragin. He is under contract next year but could come over the following year. He is the future.
We have a need for a 1D as well. This year in the draft there are several very good defensemen that could in a few years be a real top defenseman. The trade for David Jiricek could produce a very good d-man. The Wild were in a position where they needed to move him as they could not send him to the minors next year without him going through waivers and they have players with experience blocking him on making the nhl team.
Since we both agree they need a 1c what are your thoughts on how to address this?

We got Zegras for a 2nd despite Zegras having 2 years left on his deal and 3 years of service time left.

Were you born this stupid?
Kruck you should not judge his intelligence. He is just a troll who needs attention this is why he is posting about a made-up trade.
Thanks for your input on this forum we need a positive prospective.

TK should've been traded years ago after putting up a lot of points.  They could've gotten a lot for him.  But instead they gave him a long term contract.
He has a no trade with a beautiful home. His wife and him just announced they are having a third child. We often forget that these players have lives and may be happy with the area. I know years ago I was offered a promotion, but I would have to relocate to Western Pa. I did not take it as family and friends are important to people around you.

Well there goes Edmonton in the Ristolainen sweepstakes LOL

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/article/oilers-add-blueliner-murphy-from-blackhawks/

confirmed now that Danny boy wants a first
Considering his age and that he is an ufa a second round pick seems pretty high. The Oilers are not making the playoffs, and their draft picks should be high. So, a first from them was never going to happen. The teams to watch are Dallas, the Avs, Red Wings and Boston. Dallas or the Avs does not have a first-round pick and I think both Boston and Detroit would either be offering future pick/s or prospects.

With zero coaching experience.
If you read many of the posts here, you should understand that everyone is a better coach than the people doing it. Or at least they believe they are. I agree that he does not have the experience but his resume of being a captain of the team is a good start. The idea is to circumvent the salary cap.

I don't think the team needs a complete tare down but several players need to be traded. Here is my list and why I think now is the time.
1 Owen Tippett the team has too many wings who will crush their cap. He needs to go to get assets to be used getting a center or defenseman.
2 Rasmus Ristolainen just does not fit.
3 Bobby Brink he will be replaced by Denver Barkey who is just as skilled and younger costing less

LOL

I basically said the same thing, except I said they should force shut down s   h  I  t    h e   a  d to retire and then make him an ambassador to the team paying him what was left of his players contract and have him glad handle the sheep and season ticket holders who spend gobs of money on his shirsey imagine their excitement when they see a toothless washed up hunchback waiting to take a photo with them.

That creates 7.75 million to spend on another grinder lol
Thanks for your reply. I think it benefits the team and player. No matter what anyone thinks about the player, playing after a back surgery is like taking a chance on your health after hockey. The money would be close for the player, and the team would be saving several million per year. When I first thought about this, I was wondering how him coaching the team after being a player would work. But since he has been the captain for so long I think there is some deference accorded to him. I once had a job where I was being promoted to a team that I was a first line supervisor. There was a little friction at first but if you listen to members of your team most will enjoy being heard and their input is important. I don't know enough about Coots personality, but I think he is not a very overt person.
Just a thought the team does love hiring from within.

I just don't see the fit between RT and MM. I know it would be too early to consider a change but after next year if the same results would it be time to consider other options?
Coots has fours years left on his contract and after next year he will be down to 3. Would the Flyers consider firing RT and offering Coots the job with a five-year contract for five million per year and having him retire from playing. This would mean his 7.5 million cap hit would go away I believe. I don't know if this would be allowed but if so the team would actually save money and cap space. Your thoughts?

Trading Risto is a no-brainer and should be done today before he gets hurt in a game.
I agree but there are several thing at play now. Number 1 Risto has had his people put out he does not want to be traded. Teams do not want to bring in a player that does not want to be there. DB can talk to him but the team trading for him might be reluctant.
I believe that the way most trades start is with a phone call week in advance where GM's discuss which players are available and what the return would be in terms of range of draft pick, prospects or roster players. So if DB said 1st round or 2nd plus a b rated prospect that is where negotiating starts. If DB drops his ask then he risks being thought of as less credible in the future. It is not a good look to cave as his rep in future transactions would be to just wait him out for a better deal. As in so many things in life appearance is important.

Why not keep him?
His age 31 with one more year on his contract would be one reason. He is good but early this year the team did not seem to miss him when he was out. Finding a replacement would not be tough. He also does not have any no trade protection which the team seems to give out freely. I would actually like to see what the market is for Sanheim as well. He is two years younger but has four more tears on his contract. By the time he completes his contract he will be a year older than Ristolainen at the end of his contract. IMHO long contracts are risky as injuries happen. The league allows this and I get it for elite players but is either Ristolainen or Sanheim really elite?

This should build up Ristos trade value as it adds an important element that teams look for going into playoffs. Often overlooked is how a player will adjust to their system. Risto quickly adjusted to the Olympic team system. Solid hard-hitting play with few out of position mistakes.
His cap hit is good, and the Flyers could retain some salary in exchange for more return. Him being signed through next year is something that should be appealing. I still would like to see the Flyers ask for draft pick/s.

If Briere was really committed to Coots, he wouldn't have extended Dvorak, knowing full well that Cates has also earned Tocchet's trust as a 2 way center.  Danny can love Coots but still hate the contract that his predecessor gave him.

And yes, Thomas and Zegras are comparable.  Thomas is better but also 2 years older with a much less favorable contract than Zegras had when we got him.
At the time of the contract he signed with Chuck Fletcher, many thought it was a good deal. Fletcher did a lot wrong but the injuries were the problem. Anytime a player is signed for a long term an injury can turn the contract into a noose. I don't see the no trade issues as a problem as no team would want to deal for him. There should be no rush to buy him out at this time IMHO as they are in good shape with the cap. Buying him out prolongs the years of a dead cap hit. As a fourth line center he is overpaid but having him take faceoffs at critical time is not bad. Sadly he is still the best they have for faceoffs.
I believe the team will finish out of the playoffs and may have a chance to draft Viggo Björck they probably will not do this as he is a smaller center. He has a lot of talent IMHO but he does not fit their profile.

Berglund looking good against his own age is good. At the end of the day it is meaningless. That also applies to Jett’s poor performance.
How berglund does in his pro league is a much better indicator.  So far these results are not there. No offense though it is silly to think he may make the team next year. He is years away. Let him stay in Sweden to develop
Well once again we have a slight disagreement. Before the WJC I felt as you did that Berglund was several years away but the Flyers do have a weakness at the center position and Berglund may get a shot. I thought that Jett was a lock for this but now I am not as sure. A few games is not a good measure for judging either Jett or Berglund, but it does make you wonder. Thanks for your reply. If neither are good enough what are you hoping for at the center position?
